(Left to Right - Amber, Luna, Krystal, Victoria, Sulli)
There's only one group in this entire world where a little part of each of the members reflect who I am as a person today and they are none other than SM Entertainment's latest globally known girl group, f(x). Let me tell you a little bit about them before I start talking about whether or not they are sunbaenim (seniors) or hoobaenim (juniors) in their respective agency.
f(x) had officially debuted in 2009 under SM Entertainment, one of the biggest entertainment agencies in South Korea. The group consists of 5 members altogether - 1 Korean-American, 1 American-Taiwanese, 1 Chinese and 2 Koreans:
"Victoria" Song Qian - 26
Nationality: Chinese
Position: Leader, Sub-Vocalist, Dancer
"Amber" Josephine Liu - 21
Nationality: American - Taiwanese
Position: Main Rapper, Sub-Vocalist, Dancer
"Luna" Park Sunyoung - 20
Nationality: Korean
Position: Main Dancer, Main Vocalist
"Sulli" Choi Jinri - 19
Nationality: Korean
Position: Rapper, Sub-Vocalist, Visual
"Krystal" Jung Soojung - 19
Nationality: American - Korean
Position: Lead Vocalist, Maknae
Their debut song "LA chA TA" managed to capture attention wide enough to secure them the Best Rookie Girl Group of the year. Since then, they had attended possibly all music-related shows to promote themselves as a new group, bringing new vibe into the industry. But it was not until "Nu ABO" in 2010 that their popularity was beginning to grow drastically - with songs so pleasant to the ears, who could blame them? Another title song of theirs, "Pinocchio (Danger)" received similar attention later in 2011.
They had returned in 2012 with their latest electro-pop album "Electric Shock" and that was enough to push their name even further upwards fishing out 60 million views on YouTube alone. Later in the year, f(x) was nominated under two award categories - and winning one - in Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA), one of the biggest annual events in K-Pop history. After knowing all this, one could speculate that f(x) is now an official girl group who has their own version of light sticks, their own fandom name and also official colour. But the fact is? they still don't.
After 4 years and a half, they still do not possess any of these assets. True, maybe they are a little overlooked by their agency since their seniors include all the big names in K-Pop history - KangTa, BoA, TVXQ, Super Junior, Girls' Generation and SHINee. Their loyal fans could understand that much and waited patiently for these much anticipated changes. But then came their hoobae, EXO, a 12 members boy group who had debuted in April 2012. With their latest come back entitled "Wolf" under their new album "XOXO - the 1st Class" they were officially given their own version of light sticks. What is going on?
Do not get me wrong though, I love EXO but seems like SM Entertainment is neglecting f(x) for 3 consecutive years now. Their comebacks and title songs have been great but compared to EXO? it seems like f(x) is the hoobaenim instead. f(x) is not even scheduled to have their very own tour yet and it's quite sad to see these girls' hard work sometimes go to waste. What I can advise is that please step up your game and plans for f(x) cause as of now, there are more girl groups competing against each other - bringing even more unique vibes into the industry. I would hate to see f(x) drowning amidst these drastic changes when I know so well how talented they are. These girls are so precious to me and it would be nice for SM to showcase their talents for what they truly are instead of just trying to sell their music.
