The year opens with a series of dating rumours of which later we found out are NOT rumours at all! Amidst all the excitement, knowing some of the big names in the K-Pop industry are getting on with their partners, Girl's Day returns with "Something"! This actually came as a surprise to me but I am not sure how the others had taken it. Either way, there have been mixed reviews as a reaction to these girls' latest comeback.
First of all, let us talk a little about the teaser images since they pretty much went viral among the netizens. Since I had no idea that the girls were going to keep up with the sexy streak, this also came as a surprise to me. Especially after coming across Yura's teaser image - it is downright sexy but with it came another negative connotation. It is pretty clear the fact that if you manage to deliver the message just how capable you are being sexy - just referring to the girl bands - you are bound to garner enough attention to get your name going. Before when they still had cheesy music videos and fun songs to jam to, Girl's Day was different from the other girl groups out there and that was a distinct feature they have created for themselves. It is true (and sad as well) the fact that by being different, they did NOT get enough attention which is probably the reason why they are basking in the sexy concept right about now. As much as I do believe that it is "necessary" to keep the money coming into the agency, I feel as if the industry is selling sex instead of music these days.
Let us talk a little about how the song is and whether or not they have met the expectation of many. As I browse through sites and review accounts, it seems like most of the fans do agree on one thing and that is the quality of the music. But keeping in mind that most of these feedback are taken from biased people, I, therefore, will have to disagree. It is true that Minah, the main vocalist, is a clear standout in this music video but it is pretty similar to all the other ones - if you have been paying attention. As usual her vocals are strong but that is not new at all, we are bound to see the same strong performance from her on every live show there is. The song lacks balance and I find myself searching for Sojin, the leader's parts as well as Hyeri's. Yura did not rap either and this in turn, made me believe that the song has a new objective altogether although I am not exactly sure what it is.
Moving on to the music video. As much as I would like to be different from the others by saying that this does NOT look like what SiSTAR would do, I really could not help myself and I am going to go ahead and say it: it really does. While the previous statement may sound completely negative, that was not what I was aiming for. I guess for me that was a compliment for them since nailing the sexy concept is not easy and it looks like the girls are really getting the hang of it which is a mix-blessing in truth. The music video tells a story of a typical betrayed love and in them, the girls are seen to be broken and confused. Underneath it all, there is a sexual connotation as well and that is quite new coming from them. I feel as if Girl's Day is trying so hard to get their fanboys' attention that they accidentally turned a blind eye towards their fangirls which is completely sad. In all honesty, I believe they have pretty much secured their fanboys with "Female President" and I was actually hoping for a rather fun comeback but boohoo, that was not to be. The dance routine this time around, unlike their previous ones, does not really have a distinct feature in them which will make fans out there jump to their feet and start dancing along to. It is as if it was half-heartedly done.
Comments from Netizens:
"The sexy concept will eventually be the death of K-Pop."
"i wish they stick with their 2013 concept. songs like expect and female president were so catchy ."
"I wish they could at least gave Sojin some after chorus parts she has an amazing voice also !!!"
"I love girls day but if u don't think this is nothing close to Sistar you must be slow... The whole thing looks like an alone remake from the clothes to the parts in the car. I love the song and the song itself is diffrent but they should of stayed with their old concept, they made me loved them for their unique music choice from everyone else in kpop."
That was probably too much negative feedback from me but I really do believe in Girl's Day. I do believe that they can do a lot better and by saying that, I am hoping that they could bring back the old concept without throwing the new one completely. They can always come up with a hybrid concept right? here's hoping. I am probably being too harsh on them but really, we need something new and this is pretty much similar to what everybody else is doing. Girl's Day, fighting!
